Fall Favorites
Top Must-Haves for Halloween
October is here, and where I live, the leaves are changing!
It’s around this time that I feel the urge to transition our bookshelves along with the seasons.
These are some of our favorites for the upcoming season of sweaters, snuggles, hot drinks, and memorable reads.
For Littles:
Are you There Little Bat? Play peek-a-boo and reveal surprises as you flip through each for the sturdy pages with your little one. The hide-and-go seek story will have you and your little engaged and laughing to the end.
This Little Monster Enjoy a festive spin on the traditional “This Little Piggy” rhyme while sneaking in practice counting to 10.
Happy Halloween Guess the next image as you engage in the story, and then move each page to watch the picture transform, all while exploring Halloween.
Water Wonders: Halloween Tag along with Little Ghost as she goes trick-or-treating. This sturdy, re-usable activity book is great for non-messy fun! Use water or a wet finger to paint the pictures; then, let dry for use again and again.
First Magic Painting Halloween Includes a paintbrush, just add water to reveal beautiful colors of not-too-spooky scenes. (One time use)
For Middles:
Seasonal Phonics Readers: Trick or Treat Parakeet, Spider Queen’s Halloween, Llamas in Pajamas Each rhyming story entertains while also developing phonemic awareness. Each storybook also has a QR code, making these a perfect read-alouds for quiet time or travel or a read-along for beginning readers.
School of Monsters: These Short, rhyming stories that are made to read together! With limited text on each page, and highlighted words specifically for the beginning reader, this is a wonderful seasonal set for your beginning reader.
The Pumpkin Who Was Afraid of the Dark Little Pumpkin is afraid of the dark and everything Halloween. She discovers that she’s not the only one as she makes a new friend who shares her fears.
There Was a Zombie Who Swallowed a Worm This spin on “The Old Lady Who Swallowed the Fly” is more “silly” than “spooky” and will have you and your readers cackling together.
Halloween Magic Painting Paint with water for a colorful, festive creation. This is a wonderful addition to your family’s fall traditions. Serve up with a halloween-theme charcuterie snack and make it an event to remember (kids optional!)
Chapter Books:
Monsters at Halloween In this graphic-novel style story great for reluctant readers, Billy’s monsters cause mayhem once again as he does his best to rescue them and manage the mess. Grab Book 1, for the back story but you can enjoy this Halloween tale as stand-alone, too.
Vlad, the World’s Worst Vampire Vlad has trouble fitting in–among other things, he’s a vampire who’s afraid of the dark!
Leo’s Map of Monsters For those who enjoy a little more suspense, join 9 year old Leo who receives a TOP SECRET mission and must face the monsters residing in the forest outside his village.
Polly and Buster: The Wayward Witch and the Feelings Monster In a world where Monsters and Witches aren’t supposed to be friends, Polly and Buster keep their friendship a secret. Will they be able to keep their secret, and what will happy if they can’t?
Halloween Fan Favorite:
Pop-Up Haunted House This book is filled with fantastic scenes and 3-D imagery sure to amaze both young and old. Lay out with pages open for a decorate display…if you dare!
